Both are physically the same size. Does the 40 circuit (versus 20 circuit) allow a full panel of "twins"? is the buss heavier to allow for more circuits? They are both rated for 100 amps. What's the difference?

Get a 40-space 200A panel and regular breakers. The other choice is to get another panel just like the one you have now. Put it somewhere close to many other circuits. Subfeed it from the main panel. Put about half your circuits in it and use regular breakers. The other clue is the cover label has a dotted line between the upper and lower half of the label for spaces 17-20. You can barely make it out, but I can see it in the photos. The other spaces are missing it. A 20 space 24 circuit panel is not uncommon, so it is probably one of those. A panel that takes only 4 tandems was pretty common. Curiously, the busbars that allow tandem breakers have less metal surface than the kind that do not allow tandem breakers. So for instance a size twelve-twenty four Eaton panel which has an identical sized busbar assembly as an Eaton 12 circuit only panel, will probably not carry as much current safely as the 12 circuit only panel will.
